GO, Melita and Epic all sell prepaid (top-up) and postpaid (monthly bill) plans. Coverage is similar across Malta and Gozo, so the choice comes down to how much data you use, how often you travel, and whether you want a contract.

Prepaid and postpaid compared

• Prepaid: pay in advance for a bundle of data, calls and texts that lasts a set period. No contract, no credit check, and you stop by not topping up. Best for visitors, light users and short stays.
• Postpaid: a monthly bill, usually with a 24-month contract. More data and roaming for the price, bundle discounts with home internet, and first-months promotions. Best if you live here and use a lot of data.
• Postpaid without a contract: the same plans at a higher monthly price, cancellable any month. A middle option for people staying a year or less.

Plans without a contract

These plans can be taken without a contract. Where a provider sells both, the contract price is lower; the no-contract price is what you pay for the freedom to leave any month.

Prepaid in Malta

All three networks sell prepaid SIM cards and top-up bundles in their shops, online and through local retailers. Bundles typically include a data allowance and local calls for a fixed period such as 28 or 30 days. Prepaid prices change often and are not yet part of our catalogue, so check the current bundles on the provider’s website. Bring a passport or ID card: SIM cards are registered to the customer.

How to choose

1. 1Check how much data you used in the last few months. If it is under a few gigabytes, a prepaid bundle or a small postpaid plan is likely cheapest.
2. 2If you travel often, compare the EU roaming allowance, which varies between plans more than the price does.
3. 3If your home internet is with the same provider, ask about the bundle discount before choosing.
4. 4Compare on true monthly cost over the contract rather than the first-months price.
